Ventos soltos lhe
finjam e imaginem
Dos odres, e Calipsos namoradas;
Harpias que o manjar lhe contaminem;

amigo, notável artista e pensador, quando me convidou
mítica do Adamastor.
a figura. Algo que sempre me me encantou, lembrando algumas das
escultor conservador, tradicional, oposto a Rodin!
A palavra "Adamastor"
A palavra Sirius
nasce do Grego seirios, que significa "escaldante".
Sirius me pareceu perfeito.
Assim, tratei de descobrir registos de frequência eletromagnética
do sistema estelar binário Sirius.
designam as transformações daquelas frequências
quadridimensional porque nela podemos mergulhar, operando a dimensão
temporal.
forma virtual.
a própria música.
ora destruidora. Enigma da própria criatividade, que destrói
para ser. Ser e não ser. Existir sem lugar. A luz de outra
estrela, na forma de som. O mergulho no processo de transformação,
de metamorfose contínua, indomável. Eros e tanatos.

Loose winds
pretend and imagine him
From the wineskin and Calypso lovers;
Harpies that ambrosia will contaminate;
Go down to naked already passed shadows:
That, despite much and much one tune
On these vain fables, so well dreamed,
The truth I tell, naked and pure,
Overcomes any grandiloquent scripture!

Os Lusíadas, Canto V (1572)
ADAMASTOR is an intermedia
work for augmented reality developed in 2016. Its title was suggested
by Antonio Cerveira Pinto, dear friend, notable artist and thinker,
when he invited me to participate at the New Art Fest '16 in
Lisbon.
There is a place in Lisbon called Santa Catarina Garden, where
we can find a statue depicting the mythical figure of Adamastor
(many times mistakenly called as Northwind in English). That
small garden is lying on a stunning belvedere that reveals the
Tagus River, the magnificent estuary and the sea. The sculpture,
in blue marble, was made by Júlio Vaz Júnior, also
a violinist, who lived between 1877 and 1963. It is a strange
sculpture, completed in 1927, which sometimes doesn't allow us
to distinguish clearly where the stone ends and where the figure
begins. It is something have always fascinated me, reminding
me some of Rodin's works, although this may shiver the soul of
some. In general, such weirdness is because Julio Vaz Junior
have lived and participated in the life of the fascist universe.
But the true strangeness should bear on the fact that Júlio
Vaz Junior was a disciple of Jean-Antoine Injalbert, conservative
and traditional sculptor, opposed to Rodin!
Even so, the intermedia ADAMASTOR doesn't make any reference
in relation to the sculpture at the Santa Catarina belvedere.
Adamastor is a figure of Greek mythology. Son of Gaia, Earth,
who rebelled against his father, Zeus, and was struck with lightning,
fragmented into countless particles spread around the world.
The word "Adamastor" comes from the Greek adamastos,
meaning "untamed". And these untamed particles are
present in everything, may appear at any time.
Camões describes Adamastor as a gigantic and terrifying
black cloud that surprises Vasco da Gama, the discoverer, when
he reaches the Cape of Storms. There, the untamed was the fury
of the storm.
But the untamed is, par excellence, the very first sign of discovery,
of information, of what we do not know yet.
When António Cerveira Pinto invited me to do something
near the Adamastor sculpture, the image of this powerful mythical
figure immediately popped into my mind.
The proposal was for an "augmented reality" project
- something that was invisible in the place, some sort of concrete
intervention, non-ephemeral but perceptible only through equipment
such as mobile phones, smartphones and so on. That is, it was
about something that would be inside a twilight zone, inside
another dimension of reality. A kind of realization of the dematerialization
of material culture.
At first, I understood that it would only be a musical concert.
The maximum required duration was five minutes. António
suggested 4'33", as a reference to John Cage, who was a
so dear friend over years. I immediately accepted his suggestion.
John Cage had been one of those untamed particles of Nature.
Adamastor had been fulminated by a ray of light. So, I looked
at the celestial dome in a starry night. What was the brightest
star? Sirius! Twenty times more luminous than our Sun. A binary
star system located about just over eight light-years from Earth!
The word Sirius comes from the Greek seirios, which means "scorcher".
It was Sothis in Ancient Egypt. Even so, there are suggestions
that Sirius possibly launches its old etymological roots to the
Indo-European *twei, which would indicate the ideas of to agitate,
shake, toss, excite, sparkle - hence our word seismo, forming
of "earthquake".
A light, a flash, the brightest in our sky, in the dematerialisation
of a musical concert! Sirius seemed me perfect.
So I worked to find electromagnetic frequency records of that
binary star system. This would be my musical instrument - a flash
from the more radiant point of the nocturnal sky dome.
Then, I prepared a music score in the form of a four dimensions
system inside Virtual Reality, as I have doing since the late
1970s.
We can imagine this system as a field where lines and shapes
design the transformations of those original frequencies - operating
on harmonics, frequencies, dynamics, and even the shape of the
places where the sound would be and so on. Like a flutist who
plays his instrument, transforming his breath, here the music
score orients the metamorphoses of Sirius electromagnetic universe.
The music score is a virtual, three-dimensional object. It is
four-dimensional because it can dive inside, operating the temporal
dimension.
When António Cerveira Pinto saw the score, also operating
it in real-time, in VRML, it was decided: that would be the object
to be near Adamastor. It would be not only music, but also the
mysterious virtual form.
The recordings were made in Lisbon.
We can imagine a kind of scanning through this virtual field
of lines and shapes, operating the performance of the music.
As the scan happens, sounds emerge. So I created a virtual camera
that follows the scan, showing an "inside" journey
in real-time through the virtual music score as the music is
being performed.
This is the movie ADAMASTOR, lasting 4'33 ".
When we watch the movie, we participate in this dive inside the
music. But since it is a work for augmented reality, it includes
references - sometimes subliminal - to the great film Metropolis
by Fritz Lang: the city of the future, which is passed. What
is in place, but in another dimension.
Untamed change that is life, sometimes enlightening, sometimes
destructive. Enigma of creativity, which destroys to be. To be
and not to be. To be without place. Light of other star in the
form of sound. Diving in the process of transformation, of continuous
and untamed metamorphosis. Eros and Thanatos.
Recalling Fernando Pessoa's words on Adamastor: "Who can
what only I can, I who live where no one could see me, and drain
away fears of the bottomless sea?".
