Dance is poetry with arms
and legs.
Charles Baudelaire
You have to love dancing to
stick to it. It gives you nothing back, no manuscripts to store
away, no paintings to show on walls and maybe hang in museums,
no poems to be printed and sold, nothing but that single fleeting
moment when you feel alive.
Merce Cunningham
Nobody cares if you can't
dance well. Just get up and dance. Great dancers are great because
of their passion.
Martha Graham
Memory is an essential civilizing element.
There is no civilization without memory.
An enlightened being is not obligatorily wealthy or particularly
happy. There are enlightened spirits with tortuous, even dramatic
lives. In despite of that, there are two things that characterize
an enlightened being: time and obsession.
Even when time seems to be non-existent, when the person seems
to live under intense stress, who is enlightened finds within
himself the necessary time. And for this to happen, one has to
be obsessed.
But there is a third characteristic: an enlightened being is
always oriented towards the others. He or she is a kind of spiritual
guide, an existential point of reference.
This is due to another factor, also linked to time: everything
that is personal has no value. That is, in fact what is personal
has a value, but it is about a personal value, restricted to
the person and to his or her very short time spectrum of existence.
What is the life expectancy of a human being? One hundred years?
But we've dealt with tens of thousands of years of history. The
human being is as we know since about two hundred thousand years
at least. What a hundred or two hundred years of human existence,
if it would be possible to live so much, would mean in face of
thousands of years?
In this way, only what can be apprehended and in some way be
transformed by other people matters. This is the foundation of
what we call "civilization". And this process implies
the memory. Without memory there is no new, there is no transformation.
Memory is permanent elaboration.
Merce Cunningham was one of the greatest geniuses of dance ever.
His life was always feverishly and obsessively dedicated to work.
Merce was never been interested on big averages, on the seductions
of the market, on entertainment. His work was a permanent criticism
of culture in the sense of revealing it through the movement
of the body and of the structure of bodies in space-time.
